S.A.F.E. Education Program

Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.)

The goal of the Student Awareness of Fire Education, or S.A.F.E. Program, started in 1995 by the Fire Data and Public Fire Education Unit under the Office of the State Fire Marshal, is to raise a fire safe generation of children by working with schools to provide consistent, statewide fire education to students from kindergarten to high school.

South Hadley Fire District #1 S.A.F.E. program has been educating children about fire safety for many years. The average number of child fire deaths in Massachusetts has dropped nearly 60% in first thirteen years of S.A.F.E proving public fire education works.

Currently the program continues to teach the children in the Plains school and several preschools throughout the Fire District, and more recently it has been extended to reach the elderly in South Hadley. The program is designed to teach children basic fire safety to help prevent death and injury in the event of a fire, as well as helping the elderly with fire safety in the home and the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

The Department has trained several S.A.F.E. educators that work hand and hand with the community.
